Wellness guru converts sugar found in McDonalds Shamrock Shake into cubes

A TikTok wellness guru shocked his followers as he revealed how much sugar was in a McDonalds Shamrock Shake.

For as long as the internet has been alive, theres been a trend of people telling customers how unhealthy fast food is. While its stating the obvious, its also easy to miss (or ignore) when steaming hot food is handed to you through a drive-thru window.

How much sugar is in a McDonalds Shamrock Shake?

News of the Shamrock Shake and McFlurry broke last week as the popular Instagram page @Snackolator shared its gorgeous green mixture with the masses. Its the earliest the shake has been released to celebrate March 17s St. Patricks Day.

McDonald’s said earlier this week: “Youre in luck McDonalds fans, Shamrock SZN is finally here! The iconic Shamrock Shake and OREO Shamrock McFlurry are making their return to participating restaurants nationwide starting Feb. 5, for a limited time.

“Our classic Shamrock Shake is made with creamy vanilla soft serve, blended with mint syrup, and topped with a sweet, whipped topping. Or, for a hint of something different, try our fan-favorite OREO Shamrock McFlurry, which comes blended with crushed OREO cookies.”

In the great balance of fast-food releases, dieticians and health content creators have since addressed the release.

Joey Wellness (@joeywellness) addressed his 500k followers in a public service announcement designed to shock. It worked.

Lets see how much sugar is in a Shamrock Shake, he said, before making his way over to the McDonalds website where it displayed 97g.

While this information would be enough to answer his question, he whacked out the scales to give fans a visual. His setup was very scientific.

After some specific measurements, he revealed that the Shamrock Shake came to 20.5 teaspoons of sugar. This was also the same as 27 sugar cubes.

TikTok reacts to sugar madness

As you might expect, most of TikTok was not shocked to learn that the McDonalds milkshake was packed full of sugar.

I just got a large today. Worth it, one person confessed, as someone else countered, yall saying its nornal once a while but its 97 GRAMS OF SUGAR.

Another person wrote: But does it actually taste good? Is it worth the 97g of sugar? Genuinely asking..

What do the experts say?

There’s lots of information and guidance out there about how much sugar the average human being should have per day.

As reported by the American Heart Association, men should consume “no more than 9 teaspoons (36 grams or 150 calories) of added sugar per day.”

Similarly, the average woman should consume no more than “6 teaspoons (25 grams or 100 calories) per day.”

The reality for most Americans is quite different, with the Harvard School of Public Health reporting that the average person consumed 17 teaspoons of added sugar a day.
