Apple urges iPhone users to follow five simple tips to preserve battery life

Extending your phones battery life can be a challenge when modern smartphones are the equivalent of pocket-sized supercomputers but Apple has five key tips on how iPhone users can preserve their batteries, all without using Low Power Mode.

Turn down brightness

On its Maximizing Battery Life and Lifespan page, Apple has several helpful hints on how to extend your iPhones all-important battery life.

Apple’s first recommendation is to either turn the brightness down manually or turn on your phone’s Auto-Brightness setting to extend battery life, with the website saying:

  • To dim, open Control Centre and drag the Brightness slider to the bottom.
  • Auto-Brightness adjusts your screen to lighting conditions automatically. To activate it, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations and set Auto-Brightness toOn.

This suggestion is a no-brainer as the screen is one of the phone’s largest and most commonly used components, making it a huge drain on power.

Use Wi-Fi instead of data

When you use your device to access data, a WiFi connection uses less power than a mobile network so keep WiFi on at all times, recommends the Apple website.

  • To turn on WiFi, go to Settings > WiFi to access a WiFi network.

The reason why Wi-Fi is kinder to your phones battery life is because the device requires less energy to maintain a stable connection than when it’s searching for a cellular phone network.

Turn off background activity

While you may not be using a certain app, the app in question may still be working away in the background and consuming power unnecessarily.

There are various levels of background activity that you can select which mean your phone will only allow background activity when connected to a certain kind of network, such as Wi-Fi.

  • Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and select WiFi, WiFi & Mobile Data, or Off to turn off Background App Refresh entirely.

Alternatively, you can also select specific apps you wish to allow to use background activity. For example, you may want to allow background refresh on a messaging app to allow notifications to come through but not for your phones Notes app which you may not use as often.

Limit location services

Allowing apps on your phone to track your location is another large consumer of battery life.

  • Turn off in Settings > Privacy > Location Services.
  • In Location Services, you can see each app listed with its permission setting. Apps that recently used location services have an indicator next to the on/off switch.

As with background activity, you may want to allow location services for apps such as Maps or Weather but others may not need it left on at all times.

Turn off notifications or turn on Airplane Mode

While this may be impractical if youre waiting for an urgent message or phone call, it could come in handy if you find yourself desperately low on battery.

Turning off notifications will stop your screen from lighting up and using power every time someone messages you.

  • If an app frequently wakes your display with notifications, you can turn off push notifications for the app in Settings > Notifications. Tap the app and set Allow Notifications to Off.

Meanwhile, Airplane Mode also stops your phone trying hard to search for a signal if youre in a poorly covered. Area

  • You can optimize your battery life by turning on Airplane Mode. Open Control Centre and tap the Airplane Mode icon. Note that you cannot make or receive calls while in Airplane Mode.
