No covid-19 deaths in the North East for the first time

There have been no new covid-19 deaths in the North East of England since lock-down began, new NHS figures reveal.

The total death toll across the UK stands at 41,698 after an increase of 36 in the previous 24 hours to 5pm on Saturdaythe lowest daily increase since lock-down began.

This increase includes all recorded deaths in hospitals, care homes and in the community.

Nationally, a total of 27 covid-19 deaths were reported by NHS England today, taking the total number for the country to 27,954.

In England’s North East, a total of 1,397 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died.

However, in today’s results, no new covid-19 deaths were recorded across the region in the past 24 hours. This is the first time the results have been clear for the region since March.

In all of the above trusts, no additional deaths have been recorded in today’s data.

Is this the end of social distancing?

The optimistic data comes as Boris Johnson launches a review into the 2 metre social distancing rule on all public interactions.

As the number of daily deaths relating to the coronavirus falls, the prime minister said there was now a margin for manoeuvre.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak, speaking to the BBC, said the government will look into the measure which could have an impact on the “profitability of businesses.”
