Most congested city in America revealed, where people spend up to six days a year stuck in traffic

Sitting in traffic on the way to and from work has got to be one of the most tiresome and infuriating experiences there is and recently revealed data shows the 10 worst-affected cities across America where millions of people are losing hundreds of hours to congestion each year.

Produced by data analytics firm INRIX, the Global Traffic Scorecard explores mobility within the worlds most congested areas and shows which cities in the United States and around the globe are most affected by traffic delays. The most recent figures, which show data from 2022, reveal that commuters are losing an unbelievable amount of time to being stuck in traffic.

Americas 10 most congested cities

While cities such as Los Angeles and New York may be famed for their long traffic jams, the most congested city in the United States is actually Chicago, with people losing a whopping 155 hours to congestion in 2022 – that equates to nearly six and a half days across the year.

Boston ranks second in the list with 134 hours (five and half days) spent sitting in traffic while New York City comes in third with 117 (almost five days) hours lost to congestion.

As well as revealing the most congested cities based on time spent in traffic, the Global Traffic Scorecard also measures the monetary value of the time lost for each driver. Using data from the US Federal Highway Administration, the report estimates that one hour spent in traffic equates to $16.89. This means that Chicago commuters could be losing as much as $2,618 per year to congestion.
