If you’re worried about Zyn nicotine pouches being banned, here’s the lowdown
If you are concerned about the potential crackdown on Zyn nicotine patches following comments made by US officials, then there are some things you need to know.
Tobacco and nicotine have a long history, but in 2024, getting a fix for the addictive substance is easier than buying a loaf of bread. There are also countless ways to get that fix, from traditional cigarettes to candy-flavoured vapes. Another nicotine method, Zyn, has hit the headlines after the Senate Majority Leader pushed for further research and an eventual ban.

What is Zyn?
Zyn is a brand of nicotine pouchesn that originated in Sweden and was introduced into the US market in 2014. Unlike other brands, their pouches do not contain tobacco and are instead made from purely nicotine and food-grade ingredients wrapped in plant fibres.
They typically come in round cans containing 15 to 20 nicotine pouches and are designed to be placed in the upper lip and gum or between the gum and cheek. Zyn also comes in various nicotine strengths.
While the long-term effects are still relatively unknown, critics have argued that they are a gateway product for young people.
Why is Zyn trending?

On Sunday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer launched an attack on the brand during a press conference. He argued that they are directly aimed at young people through social media.
“It’s a pouch packed with problems high levels of nicotine,” he said. “So today, I’m delivering a warning to parents because these nicotine pouches seem to lock their sites on young kids, teenagers and even lower. And then use the social media to hook them.”
He further urged the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to delve deeper into the product with the hope of a ban in the future.
After the conference was circulated on social media, the democrats opposition fiercely combatted the statements. Everyday users have also taken issue with his idea.
What are people saying?
Writing on X, formally known as Twitter, the National Republican Senatorial Committee said: “Joe Biden wants to ban menthol cigarettes. Chuck Schumer wants to ban Zyn. The nanny state is alive and well with today’s Democrat Party.
Representative Lisa McClain of Michigan said: Hey, Chuck, the border is out of control, and Senate Dems are refusing to take up H.R. 2. Maybe we can start there instead of trying to ban Zyn and mess with consumers’ rights.
If Nikki wins shell side with Chuck Schumer and take away the Zyn. You know she will. Not me. Ill protect the Zyn. We have many beautiful flavours. Well have more. The Zyn just got 3MGs higher. Thats right. 9MG Zyn folks, said disgraced President Donald Trump.
Are there supporters of the ban?
While Zyn is quickly becoming the latest political football, with Republicans jumping at the chance to show up the democrats, some officials are standing with Schumer.
Congressional Candidate Maddison Horn tweeted: Baffled by@RepBice’s lack of support for actions against nicotine companies targeting our kids. Enough with the sideshows. When did it become a matter of political courage to agree that nicotine is harmful to our kids?
