US company offers $10,000 to anyone who can go phone free for one month

US Yogurt company Siggis is offering $10,000 to anyone who can give up their smartphones for a whole month.

The time that people spend on their smartphones is increasing day-by-day, with a recent survey finding we devote more than five hours each day to our handheld electronics. In the battle against excessive scrolling, a new contest has been launched with a major prize pool from a rather surprising source  all you need to do is give up smartphones for a month, and youll earn a small fortune of $10,000.

$10,000 to anyone who can ditch their phone for one month

US Yogurt company Siggis has just launched a new contest as part of their 2024 Digital Detox campaign, in which they challenge people to give up their smartphones for a whole month.

Those people who can manage to go phone free for 30 days will win $10,000, a smartphone lockbox, a good old fashioned flip phone, a one-month pre-paid SIM card, and three months worth of Yogurt.

Were introducing a NEW kind of Dry January this year. Instead of abstaining from alcohol for a month, we challenge you to ditch your smartphone!

The contest officially started on January 17 and entry applications can be submitted until January 31  10 potential winners will then be chosen in mid-February.

Siggis director of PR Kristina Drociak explained why the Yogurt company would care to create such a competition, and what benefits a smartphone detox can bring:

Our brand ethos is all about stripping away the unnecessary, and just like fewer ingredients in yogurt we believe fewer digital distractions can make for a more satisfying life, she said.

“The goal of the program is to show people the benefits of going digital-free in hopes that this can start new healthy habits in 2024 and beyond.”

Collectively, the prizes available to winners are priced at $11,159 with the entire prize pool costing just over $111,000.

How to apply for the Smartphone Detox Contest

Applying to Siggis Digital Detox content is only available to US residents over the age of 18 and will require each contestant to write (and submit) a 100500-word essay on why they should be chosen as one of the lucky 10.

According to the official entry requirements, your essay must contain the following information:

  • An explanation as to why the participant needs a digital detox in their life
  • An explanation as to how a digital detox will impact the participant in a positive way
  • An explanation that aligns with Siggis brand philosophy of live simple and less sets you free

Participants essays will then be judged based on How clear the explanation [is] of how the participant will use the time during the digital detox to live a simpler life and their understanding that less sets you free also means less time spent on smartphones could lead to a more rewarding and free life.
