Germans love going on ‘Walking Dates’ but not all TikTok users are game for it

A dating tradition unique to Germans has sparked a debate among TikTok users as they weigh the pros and cons of “Walking Dates”.

It has become a running joke on social media, with people sharing their experience of long walks on dates, which is apparently common in Germany. While strolling about the streets or a forest with your Tinder or Bumble match sounds romantic, if not exciting, TikTok users have qualms with the unreasonable expectations accompanying the unique dating practice.

‘Walking Dates’ are a thing in Germany

A lot of users recently learned about Walking Dates from viral videos on TikTok, which is popular in German culture. Non-German folks were caught off guard when asked out on dates that involved walking for miles in a stretch. They didn’t know how to feel about it.

A typical walking date, according to daters who have allegedly experienced it, includes walking on the streets, forest, or even in the rain, while you explore your romantic interests.

A couple of funny skits on TikTok imagine the Walking Dates more like a talk through the city’s heritage, but that’s only an exaggeration to mock dating tradition.

Instead of dates that start with a candlelight dinner and end in a long drive, people have simply walked from one part of the city to another, learning about its rich history and the dater’s memories associated with the places they walked through.

One TikTok user couldn’t stop laughing as he shared his experience of a walking date. He says he had to pee mid-walk, but his date kept delaying a toilet stop because he was too engrossed in the artwork, which was special to that region.

TikTok users are divided over the unique dating practice

Not everybody seems to be on the same page about walking on dates. It seems Germans don’t mind walking long distances irrespective of factors that others could find challenging.

When one TikTok user said her date made her walk in the rain because they thought it was “romantic”, another lady admitted to not having a great time when she went on a walking date in winter. She says it was too cold to take her hands out of her coat pocket, let alone enjoy the overall experience.

But, some romantics love the idea of getting to know one another on long walks. Fitness freaks love it even more as they can burn some calories while building meaningful connections.

Nothing could indeed beat the beauty of nature – a stroll through the forest in autumn may feel like you’re in heaven. However, users have qualms with the harsh weather and stubborn daters who are determined to walk even when it’s causing inconvenience to the other person.

And, let’s not forget the budget factor, walking dates are easy on the pocket as you don’t have to pay for a fancy dinner or use Uber to commute.

So, walking dates can be a pleasant experience if they are well-thought-through and have the consent of everybody involved.
