Meet the laptop of the future, capable of displaying a 100-inch virtual Augmented Reality screen whilst also fitting inside your backpack.

The next-generation laptops are more powerful and efficient than ever before, but many are also coming without physical screens. Leading the competition is the intriguing Spacetop, a new-era laptop that can project a 100-inch virtual screen in front of your very own eyes while also being sleek enough to fit inside your backpack.

Laptop with 100-inch virtual screen can fit in your backpack

The Spacetop Augmented Reality laptop was first revealed to the public in May last year. However, it was available to purchase through an invite-only early access program.

The world’s first AR laptop is designed and manufactured by American tech group Sightful and is now available to the public (while stocks last) for $2,150 although the laptop is only available to customers in the US.

The virtual screen display can be extended up to 100 inches and, with only a pair of AR glasses and keyboard in tow, the Spacetop is easily small enough to fit inside your backpack and is only slightly heavier than the latest MacBook Air.

Its designed for work; not play with easy access to multiple screens and even a reality mode that allows you to keep track of the world around you. That being said, the laptop can still stream YouTube videos up to 1080p, and has 5G connectivity, 128GB of storage, and 8GB of RAM.

Spacetop makes work from anywhere actually work. Whether enjoying coffee at a cafe or cramped in a coach seat cross-country, you have all the screen real estate you could ever want, in a device the size of a laptop.

Although innovation never comes cheap, it should be noted that this is still the worlds first-ever AR laptop, and that the $2,150 price tag also includes customized prescription lenses, if you wear glasses.

Celebrating the launch of the Spacetop for the general public, Tamir Berliner, CEO and co-founder of Sightful explained:

“The feedback we received has directly informed the refinement of our software, helping us get it to the point where we are ready to open up Spacetop to the broader public so they can experience the next stage in the evolution of laptops and the value that Augmented Reality can bring to their everyday lives.”

Experts praise the AR laptop as tech to keep an eye on in the future

A handful of tech aficionados and experts have been given the opportunity to test the AR laptop and, across the board, the responses have been notably positive.

The only two major drawbacks that were identified were the fact that the AR glasses arent as discreet as customers may want, and that the system is only able to run through a highly customized version of Googles Android OS.

One Wired reporter who got the chance to try out Spacetop called it simple and intuitive, praising the accessibility and performance of the Spacetop. However, they also acknowledged that I’m not sure I’d be able to sit in a coffee shop or on a flight without worrying about the weird stares I’d get.

Tech expert Scott Stein praised both the idea and technology, but held out a definitive conclusion. Instead stating that the system seemed a bit ahead of the curve and a Spacetop is a pretty fascinating first step to what I imagine will be a lot more on this front.”

Something that a lot of the reviews had in common was praising the emphasis on workflow and workspace creativity, when many competitors have chosen to go the entertainment route.
