Winter is the most popular season for dating, but I say stay single

Studies say that January and February are the best times to find a significant other thanks to an increase in dating app sign-ups, but thats exactly why I say you should run for the hills.

Dating is, at its core, about honesty. Honesty with your partner, and honesty with yourself. And if you are being your most honest self right now, do you really want to filter through hordes of hungry single people during the busiest time for online dating?

January 7 marked the busiest day of the year in dating, according to Tinder. The dating app giant, based in Los Angeles, California, reported that 11.4 million more messages are set to be sent from now until Valentines Day on February 14. Thats an impressive 22% increase.

There couldn’t be a better time to put yourself out there with ‘peak dating season’ on the horizon, they said.

In the hopes of snagging a new beau, users are also uploading a staggering 2,263 pictures every minute. But if were being honest, most of them will be group shots and youll be forced to crack out your FBI training to identify the profile owner.

New Year, New Me

Every year, as January rolls around and we all regret our decisions over the festive period, millions of us naively declare, New Year, new me. A poll from YouGov found that a third of adults in America make New Years resolutions, with only 9% actually following through.

Moreso, the time of New Years resolutions seemingly coincides with the busiest time of the year for dating.

On X, formally known as Twitter, one person confessed: In 2024 I want to get back on Tinder so I’m adding it to my new year’s resolution.

My New Year’s resolution is start back dating again, but then again I said that for the last two new years and didn’t do it, so let’s see how long this last, another person honestly confessed.

Someone else said, ’New Year’s resolution: Find a stable partner so I can finally delete my dating apps for good.

For that reason, you should stay single for just a bit longer.

Be one in a million, not one of millions

While, statistically speaking, you have a better chance of finding a match over the next month, thats also why you might want to hold off.

If millions struggle to keep to their resolutions, why would a New Year relationship be any different? Sure, you might make an instant connection and be one step closer to happily ever after, but you could just as easily waste a few months with someone you will one day ignore on the street.

Coincidentally, the spring is widely reported as one of the most prolific times for a breakup.

It could also be prudent to ask yourself what you actually want. Are you making a vow to date in 2024 out of some odd New Year obligation? Are you looking for something serious, or a few months of fun and an expensive Valentines present? Theres no right or wrong answer.

The only thing you need to do is take a look inward and realise what you truly want. Sure, you wont get a teddy bear or a box of chocolates next month, but at least youll have more money in the bank and enough energy to actually give dating a shot later in the year.
