Simple winter hack shows how floor mats can be used to get your car out the snow
Severe winter snowfall can halt daily life if you aren’t aware of some highly useful life skills, including an easy hack to get your car or any vehicle unstuck when the tires don’t move.
Although the United States experienced low snowfall in 2023 compared to previous years, the temperature drop and harsh weather conditions are something to be prepared for. While one TikTok-famous plumber’s tips to avoid water pipes from freezing can help you stay warm within your homes, the simple hack involving floor mats of your car is a must to enable a hassle-free commute.

Use floor mats to get your car unstuck from snow
Several TikTok users have tried and approved the life hack to free your car’s wheels stuck in the snow by just using floor mats. You don’t even need a shovel.
If the wheels are stuck in the snow, place a mat side-down in front of the wheels in the direction you want to go. Start the engine and hold the gas pedal for the vehicle to go over the floor mats. If your car is a rear-wheel drive, the mats must be placed before the back tires.
You can stop and move the mat a little further each time to inch closer to the path clear of snow.

The hack works on the simple logic of traction, which is created when the mat comes in contact with the tire. This also works to get your car unstuck from ice or sand as the mats offer grip to the tires regardless of what’s underneath.
The simple technique has gained popularity for its convenience as you don’t have to rely on extra equipment – the floor mats in your car will do the job.
Other life hacks if your vehicle is stuck
- Turn off traction control before starting the engine as your car needs the extra traction to move.
- Clear the path around the vehicle using a shovel or other tools like a screwdriver and ice scraper to remove any snow that’s higher than your car’s ground clearance. Creating a rough surface by digging out the snow it’s stuck in will create more traction.
- The breaking technique gives more power to the tire by decreasing the spinning. This is done by breaking while giving a little gas at the same time. But, make sure to not try the method for more than a few seconds to avoid overheating the breaks.
- Let a little air out of your tires until they look slightly lower, so a larger part of the rubber from the tire is in contact with the ground to achieve better traction for a short distance. But, the air must be refilled immediately as driving with a flattened tire poses great risks.
- Kitty litter or sand – can be sprinkled around the tires stuck in the snow for traction.
