Interesting science behind Corgis’ fluffy butts helps them float on water
Let’s talk about Corgis and their fluffy rear. The videos on social media of the cute pet animal showing their butts afloat are real, and science explains what keeps them from submerging in water.

What causes Corgis’ butts to float in water?
Have you wondered why Corgis have chubby rears? It’s because their butts consist of 80 percent fat instead of muscle fibers. This is also the reason they are nicknamed “bubble butt”, according to a Daily Mail report.
Thanks to the dog’s short legs and comparatively larger head, the fat is distributed at the end of its body.
There are plenty of videos on TikTok, X/Twitter and elsewhere of Corgis in the swimming pool or bathtub, conveniently floating in the water as their butts won’t drown regardless of the number of times you push them inside.
Although their fluffy backs won’t go inside the water entirely, they still aren’t considered great swimmers among dogs. That’s because of their long bodies and stubby legs, which makes it harder for them to keep their complete bodies afloat.
Pet owners are advised to strap a life vest around their torso when they are required to swim.
More interesting facts about the cute dog breed
Aside from their cute butts and pointy ears, Corgis boast many more interesting features unique to their breed.
For starters, they’ve been known in Wales for more than 3000 years and were originally trained to drive cattle away.
Their name literally translates to “Dwarf Dog” in the Welsh language – where “cor” stands for dwarf and “gi” means dog.
This breed of dog comes with two coats of hair, which helps protect it from weather conditions. However, their hair is considered low-maintenance as it’s short.
The most interesting fact about Corgis is, in fact, a myth, which holds that this breed of dog was employed by the fairy kingdom.
The website Rover notes: “The fair folk would use them as mounts, literally riding herd on these herders, making them truly enchanting.”
