Excessive consumption of delicious meat linked to colon cancer, warns study

Cancer that affects the colon and rectum is the second-leading cause of cancer-related death globally and a new study links it to a widely consumed common meat

Although genetics and lifestyle play a major role in causing cancer, poor diet is proven to increase the chances of the deadly illness too, including alcohol and processed meat.

Red meat linked to colon cancer

A recent study by Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore found that excessive consumption of red meat can increase the risk of colorectal cancer – cancer affecting the colon and rectum.

Red meat refers to fresh unprocessed muscle meat from mammals such as beef, veal, pork, lamb, mutton etc. The study found that the iron in red meat can react with an enzyme called telomerase, which leads to progression of said cancer.

The scientists hope that the future research could “focus on refining therapeutic strategies that target this mechanism”, especially targeting patients with high level of iron.

“These findings not only offer a novel treatment approach but also provide valuable insight into the molecular pathways linking high intake of iron-rich red meats to colorectal cancer,” the study states.

Similarly, cutting down on processed meat, such as sausage, hot dogs, bacon etc., can prevent numerous illnesses, including cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Important hygiene routine you shouldn’t skip

Another recent study warns against skipping an essential morning routine that’s linked to neck and head cancer.

It seems quitting smoking alone doesn’t protect you from certain deadly diseases as study links it to bacteria in the mouth which is equally dangerous.

Therefore, you must never take your oral hygiene for granted and ensure you brush twice daily, in addition to other dental care.

Poor oralhealth can put individuals at greatrisk of other cancers affecting the stomach or esophagus. This is mainly due to the harmful substances produced by the bacteria the mouth hosts.
