Former McDonald’s chef rates popular menu items to see if they are ‘up to standard’

What is your go-to menu item at McDonald’s? Big Mac? Quarter Pounder with Cheese? Chicken Selects? Well, a former chef has revealed what item is actually worth ordering.

Mike Haracz, who used to be a McDonald’s corporate chef, visited the fast food chain across his state, bought some of the most popular menu items and ranked them out of 10 based on his own expert knowledge. Here are the results.

The former McDonald’s chef wanted to see if the menu items were “up to standard” and rated each item based on all kinds of things from the taste to the construction and the amount of sauce.

Each McDonald’s restaurant is its own franchise so may cook the food slightly differently, but they all have to use the same ingredients and follow the same rules.

Big Mac – 6/10

Surprisingly, the iconic Big Mac came in at the bottom of the list. He said they skimped on the lettuce, the burger was lopsided, the cheese was falling out the side, it was only lukewarm, the patty had been held in the warmer for too long and the sauce only covered one side.

Bacon, Egg & Cheese Bagel – 6/10

Next up is a McDonald’s breakfast item, the Bacon, Egg & Cheese Bagel. It got the same rating as the Big Mac due to it looking messy, the cheese not being melted and the egg being in the holding cabinet for a while. However, he did say the bagel was toasted “pretty good” and the bacon was crispy.

Sausage, Egg & Cheese McMuffin – 8/10

The Sausage, Egg & Cheese McMuffin came in next, which the ex-chef said is a much better breakfast option. It had a warm and nicely toasted English muffin and the cheese was placed perfectly, but the egg let the sandwich down as it was overcooked.

Quarter Pounder – 9/10

Now getting onto the better menu items, the Quarter Pounder with Cheese got a solid nine with a good amount of onions, pickles, ketchup and mustard. The burger was juicy, hot and “extra fresh”. It’s only downfall was the placement of the cheese in the middle rather than a “star” shape.

Filet-O-Fish – 9.5/10

And the top spot goes to… the Filet-O-Fish! It’s one of the most controversial items on the menu, with people loving or hating it. However, that makes for a great burger because it’s always cooked fresh when ordered and comes piping hot.

So, if you want good food at McDonald’s it looks like your best bet is to order a Quarter Pounder or a Filet-O-Fish, although standards will differ between restaurants and many things may affect the food such as time of day, busyness and staff.
