American woman confused by strange black tights British people ‘love to wear’

An American woman has divided the internet after sharing a strange thing she noticed about winter fashion while living in the UK.

The TikTok user, who goes by the name An American In London, shares videos comparing the two countries, and has caused quite a stir after claiming that people don’t wear black tights in the United States.

American woman confused by tights UK women ‘love’

She walked around London filming multiple women wearing dark black tights with their dresses and skirts and said: “I’ve noticed that women in the UK love to wear these black tights that aren’t see-through.”

The woman claimed no one really wears tights in the US, or if they do it’s nude-colored ones which they call ‘pantyhose’. Tights are thick and opaque, with a denier of 40 to 100, while pantyhose are sheer and under 40 denier. Denier is a measure used to determine the thickness of the fibers.

“So I think it’s super interesting that this is the trend here in London. It seems like no matter the outfit, always black tights,” she continued.

The most confusing part is that she’s from Colorado, which is the ninth coldest state according to US News & World Report. So, they don’t wear tights in Colorado?

Well, people beg to differ in the comments. Many who live in similarly cold states like New York and Chicago are claiming they do wear tights, and it’s very normal. Think Rory Gilmore in Gilmore Girls and Rachel from Friends!

However, others are agreeing with the American that nobody really wears tights in America, with one person saying: “Children do. Adults not so much. Not many people even wear pantyhose anymore. Obviously a few people do but its not common.”

“I havent worn tights since I was like 9 years old and even then it was bc my mom forced me to wear them,” said another.

Many said those people “must be from Arizona or something”. Who knew tights could cause quite a stir?

‘Its not a trend in London, its just a winter requirement’

She has riled Brits up in the comments too, who are arguing that tights aren’t a “trend” – they are just trying to keep warm!

“Trend? Girl we are FREEZING. Its too cold to care about tight opacity here,” one person said.

Another wrote: “It’s not a trend it’s just the warm & practical way to dress in British weather.”

“If you want to wear a dress/skirt between October and May, you have to wear tights. It’s cold, they’re comfortable,” a third person added.

Others think they have worked out where the difference lies. More than 90% of UK schools wear a uniform, and tights are worn in the winter. However, only 18.8%of public schools in the United States require a uniform according to the National Center For Education Statistics.

That means tights are a wardrobe staple in Britain right from childhood, possibly explaining why they seem to be more common there. However, tights are a thing in the US too – and don’t even get us started on gym tights!
