Roll up, roll up, get your death clock prediction

Have you ever asked yourself ‘when will I die? reads the opening line on the Death Clock website.

It claims to run on an advanced life expectancy calculator, but its quite simple, really. At least, the front end doesnt involve much input.

The Death Clock also comes with the caveat that it is unlikely to predict your actual date of death. Hardly surprising, but worth pointing out, I suppose.

Anyway, what you have to input is this:

  • Date of birth
  • Sex
  • Do you smoke?
  • BMI
  • Are you optimistic, neutral, or pessimistic?
  • How much alcohol do you consume?
  • Where are you based?
  • What is your level of fitness?
  • How healthy is your diet?

When I answered the questions and clicked Submit, I was given the result that I would live to be 105 years, 4 months, and 26 days old. That gives me about another 75 years left to live and means Ill almost almost make it into the 22nd century. But not quite. Still, not bad going!

You can find a link to the test at the bottom of this article.

Are people living longer than ever before?

If you take a long view, life expectancy has increased massively over just a few generations.

In 2021, according to Our World In Data, the global average life expectancy was just over 70 years. 200 years ago, it was less than half that, in all regions of the world.

This is the result of a variety of advances. Were better nourished, we have cleaner water, and we have better healthcare. There are other factors, too, including technological advancements and breakthroughs in antibiotics.

However, the last few years have presented data gatherers with a blip. In 2020, life expectancy decreased in at least 31 countries. The decreases were most dramatic in Russia, the US, and Bulgaria.

Many of the countries that saw a decrease in life expectancy during the COVID-19 pandemic have since bounced back, but the US hasnt. It continued to fall in 2021, for the first time since before the Second World War. We can say the same of Bulgaria and Slovakia.

So, while the last 200 years have seen phenomenal increases in life expectancy across the board, the first warning signs have appeared that, at least on a national level, some countries might have hit their peak.
