Bizarre ‘Finger in drink’ trend blows up on Twitter as users are ‘tapping in’

Social media users are extremely confused by pictures of people’s fingers in their drinks as they can’t make sense of the strange trend that has taken over all platforms.

Podcaster and X/Twitter user HeatDaddy is the one behind popularizing the trend that has left alcohol lovers divided over “tapping in” before taking a sip of their favorite drink. But, the practice isn’t meaningless.

What is the Finger in Drink trend?

The trend, as the name suggests, sees people dipping their fingers in their drinks before taking their first sip, and it’s supposed to mean they are consuming alcohol.

Although the exact origin of the trend isn’t clear, its popularity is credited to HeatDaddy, who would often post pictures of his finger in his drink. He refers to the action as “tapping in” whenever he consumes an alcoholic beverage.

The rather strange tradition has been in practice since 2018, and it has gathered a lot of attention now in 2023 as users are “tapping in” during the holidays.

The challenge was started keeping in mind a drink with alcohol content, but X users have added their own meaning to it by trying it on non-alcoholic beverages as well, simply to take part in the trend.

Pre-drinking ritual isn’t everybody’s cup of tea

You may find it funny to dip your finger in your drink before raising a toast, but not everyone is game with the bizarre practice. The Tapping In trend has nevertheless gathered a lot of reactions owing to its ambiguity.

“I don’t know what this trend means but all cool kids are trying it. So I’m tapping in,” wrote one.

Another user asked: “Ive seen too many and not asked. What does the finger in the drink mean? (vulnerable cause I think its the first trend Ive ever asked for an explanation so take it easy)”

A third user opined: “The sticking fingers in your alcoholic drink trend disgusts me. Have we not learned anything from the last few years?”

“I will be giving in to the Fingers in Drink trend,” read one comment, while another said: “Yuck! I would never stick my fingers in my drink. What’s wrong with ya’ll?”
