British man gobsmacked after finding out what time school starts in America

Children in most countries across the world go to school, but the way it works differs. Uniforms, teaching styles and lesson lengths all vary – as does the time you start.

A British man has gone viral on TikTok this week after finding out what time school usually begins in America, and he was totally gobsmacked.

Time school starts in America shocks British man

Josh Cauldwell, who has 4.8 million followers and shares the differences between the UK and US, did a quick Google search and found out that most American schools begin at around 7 am.

“America, I need answers,” he shouted. “I need to know if this is true or not. What is going on in America? Apparently school stars in America at 7 am.”

To people in the US, that probably seems normal and you don’t know any different, but starting at 7 o’clock is very early compared to in England.

Most schools in the UK start at around 9 am, two whole hours after those in America, and the Brit was totally gobsmacked.

“America has already been studying for two hours before the Brits have even got in school,” he shrieked.

The TikTok user said that if he was raised in America, he “would not have survived” because he hated getting up early as a youngster – as do most kids.

“It blew my mind when someone told me Americans start school at 7 am. What’s going on?” he reiterated once again in shock.

‘Yeah, school always started at 7:30 am for us’

In the comments, people are confirming that school really does start between 7 am and 7:30 am for most students, although it does vary by age and state.

“Yup. 7:15 with the Pledge of Allegiance schools, out at 2:15pm,” one person wrote.

Another said: “Mine get on the bus at 6:55 am and get home about 3:15 pm. Their school starts at 7:30 am.”

“My son starts at 7:25 am in grade school,” a third person added.

Someone else revealed her teen sons have to catch the bus at 5:45 am for a 7 am start. That’s the middle of the night! However, starting early does have its perks. One person’s high school starts at 7:05 am and ends at 1:35 pm, so they still have the whole day after they finish.

“Yeah, school always started at 7:30 am for us?” another wrote, as if it’s totally normal.

Another huge difference between school in the US and UK is what students wear. School uniforms are worn in 90% of primary and secondary schools in England, but only 18.8% of public schools and 57% of private schools do in the US, Uniform Market reveals.

The school supplies you have to buy vary between countries too, like pens, textbooks and sports kits. This American mother was not prepared for strict list of school supplies she had to buy for her son in Japan.
